The holidays are a busy time for everyone. Between work, family commitments and all the other holiday activities, finding an extra hour in the day can seem like an impossible task. But one hour can literally mean the gift of life for three people.
How? Every donated unit/pint of blood is divided into 3 separate components (red blood cells, plasma, platelets) and can be given to 3 different patients. That’s a really productive hour!
During the holidays, blood donations typically decrease as donors become unavailable due to vacation schedules, winter illnesses or inclement weather. Maintaining a sufficient blood supply is critical. According to the Red Cross, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds.
This year, Kaye-Smith sponsored a blood drive at our Renton facility, giving employees a convenient way to donate by bringing the donation center to them. After they’ve donated blood (and enjoyed some juice and cookies) participating employees also received a tee-shirt with the words “I saved a life. What did you do today?”
We’d like to give special thanks to all of the Kaye-Smith employees who gave blood during our blood drive. If you’d like to learn more about donating blood, the American Red Cross website is a great place to start.
If you are interested in hosting a blood drive in the Puget Sound area, you can contact Nikki Watkins with the Puget Sound Blood Center. She can provide you with all the information you need to host a successful event.
